About us

The history of Aquanaria is closely tied to that of its Managing Director, Gustavo Larrazábal, a tireless entrepreneur who more than 3 decades ago ventured into the aquaculture sector with a single objective: to farm large size sea bass (weighing more than one kilogram) achieving an exceptional gastronomic quality.

The origin of Aquanaria is the pioneer company in Spain in the marine farming sector, a company which was established in 1973. In 1984, new investors joined the company with Gustavo Larrazábal as the Managing Director. A period of intense research was initiated with different locations and also the breeding of different species of molluscs and fish.

In 1989 they began breeding marine fish at the first sea farm in the Canary Islands.

Larrazábal focussed the company's activity on breeding sea bass off the coast of the Canary Islands with the objective of obtaining large size specimens of high quality for the gourmet channel.

In recent years the company has changed its name and has restructured its management team creating a new brand: AQUANARIA. With offices in Cantabria and the Canary Islands and more than 130 employees, it is currently the leading XXL sea bass producer in Europe for Gourmet Cuisine.

Philosophy

Our working philosophy is based on two key points:

1.

Develop a unique market niche for our Great Atlantic Sea Bass produced in the rough waters of the Atlantic Ocean. We accomplish this in a manner that is natural, sustainable and while preserving the environment and natural habitat of the species.

2.

We want to be known as the producers of the best sea bass in the world. AQUANARIA is synonymous of quality, service and good work thanks to vast accumulated experience and the organisational ability and passion that characterises our work.

The values of AQUANARIA are focussed, on the one hand, in producing products that are healthy, nutritious and tasty based on a policy that is responsible with the environment and food safety and on the other hand, in considering personnel as key to making it possible. We believe in people who are committed and excited to be a part of an innovative and visionary team.

R&D&I

The investment in R&D&I is essential at Aquanaria. Our process is based on 4 pillars: continuous research and development, control conducted by experts, monitoring of the fish throughout their entire life cycle and selection of individual fish prior to being dispatched.
These are the guarantees provided by Aquanaria.

We are committed to a sustainable aquaculture and with all the aspects of the life cycle of our sea bass, this is why we collaborate with different research agencies on internally promoted projects such as on projects where we act as promoters.

HATCHERING

We have the first hatchering plant (breeding centre) in the Canary Islands. Here we are capable of producing and feeding throughout the entire year, which guarantees a constant supply of juvenile fish and allows our product to be completely traceable.

BREEDING
Our juvenile fish enjoy a controlled and monitored environment inside our plant until they are ready to be transferred to our breeding centres in the Atlantic Ocean.

EXERCISE
The marine installations are located several miles off the southern coast of Gran Canarias. Juvenile fish reach a weight of 20gr and remain there 36 months until they reach an average weight of 2kg. They grow while swimming in the clear, cold and rough waters of the Atlantic and fighting against the marine currents, a constant exercise that helps them achieve an improved consistency and texture.

HARVEST
Once the desired size is reached and always prompted by an order, the fish are caught using the "thermal shock" method, the technique that best preserves the quality of the caught fish without harming the remaining fish.

Markets
